I am a writer and abolitionist primarily covering the intersection of the criminal legal system and culture.

Too often and for far too long journalists have profited off of the ideas and stories of people impacted by the criminal legal system. This must be rectified. In my work, I aim to combat journalistic practices rooted in extraction. Inspired by colleagues in this community, I seek to co-report stories with writers who are currently or formerly incarcerated, conduct more "As Told To" essays that hand the direction and content of the story over to impacted individuals themselves, and, at minimum, ensure articles no longer use dehumanizing language like "inmate," "felon," and "convict.”

I believe the next crucial intervention within media is to build channels wherein publications allocate stipends to said impacted individuals when they are interviewed.
